Why become a member?
The Buddhist Society of Western Australia (BSWA) offers membership to anyone who wishes to support the Society’s aims of encouraging the teaching, practice and realisation of Buddhist principles, and of helping to make these teachings and practices available to the general public.
As a member of BSWA you receive:
- All members receive our high quality newsletter, the Enlightened Times, by mail if you wish.
- All members have borrowing rights for books and CDs from BSWA library’s extensive Dhamma collection.
- Full members have priority for places at BSWA 9 Day Retreats at Jhana Grove Meditation Retreat Centre in Serpentine.
- Full members have voting rights at the Annual General Meeting and are eligible to apply to join the Committee or become office bearers of the Buddhist Society of WA.
- Good karma by supporting the BSWA, which provides Buddhist teachings free of charge locally and internationally via its acclaimed website and YouTube channel, and runs two monasteries, as well as a purpose built meditation retreat centre.
- All members must abide by the Constitution of the Society. Copies are in the Library and on the BSWA website.
Associate, Full or Youth Membership?
Associate Membership: many new members start with an Associate Membership as they first begin to learn and practise Buddhism. We welcome Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike to support the Society by applying for this membership.
Youth Membership is free of charge for those under 18 years of age.
Full Membership is open to practising Buddhists who have taken the Three Refuges and the Five Precepts with an ordained Buddhist monk or nun. If you are unable to do so, you may take the precepts online here https://bswa.org/practices/taking-five-precepts-online/. Once you have taken the precepts, please inform the Assistant Secretary (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Lifetime Membership is available for both Associate and Full members. This is equivalent of 20 years membership and will save you ever having to renew again this lifetime!
How do I apply?
You may apply for Youth or Associate Membership by completing Part A, B and C of the membership form.
A Membership form is required for all types of membership. You can download it above. Email or post the completed form to email@example.com or the BSWA at PO Box 3135, Yokine WA 6060, Australia. You can also give the form to a monk at Bodhinyana, nun at Dhammasara, or the Admin Officer at Dhammaloka.
All new Full Membership applications need to be endorsed by our Spiritual Director Ajahn Brahmavamso (Ajahn Brahm), Abbot of Bodhinyana Monastery or one of his representatives. Please approach them in person for their signature or if you live outside of Perth contact our Assistant Secretary (firstname.lastname@example.org).
The same annual fee of $50 applies to both Associate and Full membership; an Associate membership can be upgraded to Full at any time at no extra cost.
Please submit your application and payment at the same time.
