Question
I still feel like I am new to understanding Buddhism and need some guidance here. I have a friend who asked me to pray for their daughter who is ill. As a Buddhist what should I do in this situation? I have heard from others that Buddhists don't pray. Should I do anything other than wish her well?Tags: None

Ronald,
Maybe you have seen Buddhists sending metta ( loving kindness, well wishes ) to others. That is much like praying. You are just sending loving energy into the universe with the intent that the one who needs it, gets it. I will attest to a firm belief that this practice works wonders for both the giver and the receiver. If praying to a deity seems good to you, do it. Just try and look ahead at the sorts of kamma you create when you do this. I don't think one can go too far wrong in sending love out.

Well said Jerrod.
Truly prayer is not a part of traditional Buddhism. But there is nothing against prayer either, if you pray for someone else it is an act of kindness and generosity.
You can pray without implying a deity at the other end. But there's nothing wrong with praying to a deity, unless you make it part of your core beliefs, when it is not wrong per say, but it is no longer Theravada Buddhism.
My mother is catholic and we usually get priests invited over a few times a year. I pray with them as a family, sincerely. I have great respect for my mother's faith. But at the end of the day I am still Buddhist.
