  • How much food does an average monk eat for his one meal a day?

Please forgive me if I am out of line, but it's been on my mind for quite a while now. I was wondering if there was a tendency to eat a little more than, oh, maybe a regular portioned meal to compensate for eating only once a day, as a monk.

I understand that the body adjusts with regular activity and diet (at least meal times and quantity if not consistency of menu.) But maybe monks tend to eat a bigger meal than normally necessary?

    Dear Andy,

The Buddha made eating in moderation part of the gradual training. At Bodhinyana many people come to offer food, so there is no shortage. The food is put out in on the buffet tables and the monks help themselves. It is up to each monk as to what they put in their bowl. Of course in many places there is not so much available. In those circumstances a monk should practice contentment with little, unless it becomes a matter of health. Essentially we eat to maintain the body.
