  • Love and Lust

    Dear Venerable Ajahn Brahmali,

In a talk you gave, I remember you saying that Love and Lust mean the same thing. Can you please explain the reason why?

    With Metta.

    Dear Abhishek,

I honestly hope I haven't said that! Romantic love is related to lust, but the true love of Buddhism, the mettā, is not related to lust at all. In fact, when the mind is fully purified by mettā, there is no lust in the mind whatsoever.

I heard a great quote recently:

Attachment is the very opposite of love. Love says, ‘I want you to be happy.’ Attachment says, ‘I want you to make me happy.’
      —Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo'
it is a good reflection to test if it is mettā or attachment.

... 'may yo be well, may you be happy, may you be free from suffering' ...
