  • Controlling the mind

    Hello.

When we say we should control or observe our mind, to whom or which being are we referring to as the controller/observer? Is it our consciousness, our heart or body?

    Thanks.

    Dear Preet,

First I should say sorry for taking a long time to respond. The monastery's internet was down for about a month.

That "being" one refers to, it's just a way of speaking. It's actually the mind controlling the mind, and the mind observing the mind. There is no being or essence there who is in control or whose essence is awareness.

Don't try to think about this too much, though. That is a sure way to get a headache! After you have some deep meditation you can get back to it in a way that does not involve thinking but actual seeing.

Read some suttas as well if you like. There are quite a few that deal with similar questions, although I do not know by head which ones they are.

    With kindness!
